Altérra CEO says $250 billion climate investment target is within reach

Majid Al Suwaidi, the chief executive of Abu Dhabi-based Altérra, believes his organization is well on its way to meeting an ambitious financial milestone. Speaking during a recent appearance on Managing Middle East with Dan Murphy, Al Suwaidi expressed extreme confidence that the UAE-backed climate investor can mobilize 250 billion dollars by 2030. The fund was first introduced during COP28 in late 2023 with an initial commitment of 30 billion dollars, serving as a cornerstone for the region’s efforts to lead in the global energy transition.

To date, Altérra has already committed approximately 6.5 billion dollars toward various initiatives. According to Al Suwaidi, the primary goal is not just to spend capital but to prove that investing in climate solutions can yield competitive financial returns. By demonstrating profitability, the fund hopes to act as a catalyst that draws significantly more private capital into green projects and sustainable infrastructure across the globe.

A major part of this strategy involves expanding investments into the Global South through strategic partnerships with international asset managers. Beyond traditional renewable energy, Al Suwaidi highlighted new growth drivers that are accelerating the need for clean power. He specifically pointed to the surging electricity demands created by the rise of artificial intelligence and the expansion of massive data centers as key opportunities for future investment.
