Governor Josh Shapiro stood before hundreds of workers inside GE Vernova’s Charleroi factory on Thursday with a message that went beyond simple celebration. “We’re not just here to announce your success,” he told the crowd. “We’re here to invest in your success.” The investment is substantial — a combined $166 million from the governor’s office and the energy company aimed at expanding manufacturing capacity across three western Pennsylvania facilities located in Charleroi, near Pittsburgh, and in Rostraver Township.
GE CEO Scott Strazik framed the expansion as part of a broader growth trajectory for the region. He noted that the Charleroi facility employed roughly 400 workers a few years ago and has since grown to 600 employees today, with plans to reach 800. In total, 714 new jobs are expected over the next four years, supported by $6 million in state investments funneled through site development and workforce readiness efforts. Rick Siger, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, said the speed of business demands aggressive action when it comes to securing funds and preparing sites for companies ready to expand.
Shapiro also used the announcement to draw a line around energy policy, particularly regarding data centers seeking to build in Pennsylvania. Any company wanting to construct a data center must meet the governor’s grid standards by generating and paying for its own power while coordinating with local communities. Those that fail to meet those requirements will not receive his support or permission to build. Thursday’s milestone also carried national significance according to Shapiro, who declared Pennsylvania now ranks as the second-largest energy producing state in the country. As he put it, the commonwealth is investing, competing, winning — and GE Vernova is simply the latest proof of it.
