President Donald Trump is heading to metro Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon to promote a new nationwide investment initiative for children during a speech at Wheeler High School in Cobb County. The White House is calling the program Trump Accounts, and the administration says it is designed to help American families build long-term wealth from an early age.
Under the proposal, every American child under 18 would be eligible for an account, while children born during Trump’s second term would receive a $1,000 federal deposit to get started. Parents and employers could contribute up to $5,000 annually, and the administration estimates that accounts could grow to more than $18,000 even without additional deposits. With maximum contributions over time, officials say some accounts could exceed $1 million by the time a child reaches age 28.
Trump is scheduled to speak at 2 p.m., and he will not be alone on stage. Gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson and Senate candidate Mike Collins are both expected to join the event, giving the appearance a clear political undertone as Georgia remains a key battleground state ahead of upcoming elections.
Not everyone in Cobb County is rolling out the welcome mat. Critics of the program argue it could actually widen the wealth gap rather than close it, since families who already have extra money to invest stand to benefit the most. Demonstrators are planning to gather near the school grounds, with Indivisible Cobb and the Cobb County Democratic Committee organizing peaceful protests starting as early as 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.
